If you have, at any time over the years, visited the Glaslyn Protection site, you will have noticed Hafod Garegog, a beautiful old house, down on the right-hand side of the lane just after you have turned off the main road.
The property was until recently the home of Dorien and Anne who both sadly passed away in 2025. Over the years they had created a wonderful garden. They have a magnificent magnolia tree which dominates the garden in spring and can be seen as volunteers pass to undertake Protection site duties. Branwen, their daughter has taken over the property and hopes to maintain the gardens as her parents used to. Dorien and Anne also took a great interest in the Glaslyn Ospreys who nested a short distance from their home and were often seen flying overhead when they were gardening.
Branwen and her husband Keith have decided to host an Open Garden event at Hafod Garegog in memory of her parents and to raise funds for Glaslyn Ospreys and the National Garden Scheme.
If you like gardens, this is a unique opportunity to visit a garden that is never open to the public. This is how it is described in the NGS booklet:
One-acre mature garden with three seasons of interest bordering the afon Nantmor and national nature reserve. Garden surrounds the part C17 house, rebuilt in 1622 from the C14 home of the poet Rhys Goch Eryri, whose poetry survives. There are upper and lower water gardens, walled and pleasure gardens with beautiful views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Cnicht, Moel Hebog and Eryri (Snowdonia).
The event will be on Sunday, 24 May from 11-4. Entry is £5 and half the proceeds from the cake stall will be going to Glaslyn Ospreys.
